Postnatal Recovery

The postnatal period is the time immediately following childbirth as your body recovers and returns to its pre-pregnancy state. This period can be challenging for many women as they grapple with physical changes like weakened abdominal muscles, episiotomy or cesarean section (C-section) wound recovery, breastfeeding-related discomfort, and potential incontinence issues.

Additionally, the new demands of caring for a newborn, coupled with lack of sleep, can lead to postural problems and associated aches and pains. Postnatal physiotherapy offers targeted exercises and strategies to help restore your strength, improve your posture, manage any physical discomfort, and regain your pre-pregnancy fitness levels. It can also provide essential support for mothers dealing with postpartum depression or anxiety, which can sometimes be influenced by physical health issues.

Lower Back Pain

During pregnancy, your body undergoes significant changes to accommodate the growing baby. One of the most common complaints from expectant mothers is lower back pain.

This discomfort is primarily due to the extra weight you're carrying, which can strain your lower back. Furthermore, your body produces a hormone called relaxin during pregnancy that allows ligaments in the pelvic area to relax and the joints to become looser in preparation for the birth process.

This same hormone can cause ligaments that support the spine to loosen, leading to instability and pain. Pregnancy physiotherapy can provide relief by strengthening the muscles in your back, improving your posture, and suggesting appropriate lifestyle modifications.

Pelvic Girdle Pain

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) can occur during pregnancy due to increased weight and hormonal changes. This discomfort often presents as pain across the lower back, hips, or at the front of the pelvis.

The pain can vary from mild to severe and can impact your mobility. PGP during pregnancy is due to the increased weight you carry, changes in your center of gravity, and the hormones that relax your ligaments as your body prepares for childbirth.

Pregnancy physiotherapy can help manage PGP by providing exercises that strengthen your pelvic floor, abdominal, back, and hip muscles.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The round ligaments that support your uterus also stretch during pregnancy, which can cause sharp or jabbing pain in the lower belly or groin area, often referred to as round ligament pain.

Physiotherapy can provide relief by teaching you exercises to strengthen your abdominal and pelvic muscles and techniques to alleviate the pain.

Round Ligament Pain

The round ligaments that support your uterus also stretch during pregnancy, which can cause sharp or jabbing pain in the lower belly or groin area, often referred to as round ligament pain.

Physiotherapy can provide relief by teaching you exercises to strengthen your abdominal and pelvic muscles and techniques to alleviate the pain.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back down to your feet. During pregnancy, the increased pressure on the nerve from the growing uterus can lead to a condition known as sciatica, characterised by sharp and shooting pain, numbness, or tingling from the lower back down to one or both legs.

Physiotherapy can help alleviate sciatic pain through exercises that improve your posture and stretch and strengthen your back muscles.

Diastasis Recti (Pooch)

Diastasis recti is a condition where the two large parallel bands of muscles that meet in the middle of the abdomen separate due to the stretching of the uterus.

This can cause a bulge or "pooch" in your belly.

Postnatal physiotherapy can help improve this condition by guiding you through exercises that help bring the muscles back together.

Each of these conditions can be treated or managed with a physiotherapy program that addresses the specific needs of the pregnant woman. These programs can include stretching, strengthening, education on body mechanics, and relaxation techniques.

Common Problems associated with Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but it often comes with physical discomfort and challenges. As your body nurtures new life, you may encounter issues like lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain, and postnatal recovery difficulties. These common problems result from the significant changes your body undergoes to accommodate your growing baby.
